Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's leading manufacturers of tissue, pulp, paper, packaging, building products and related chemicals. The company has approximately 300 manufacturing facilities across North America, South America and Europe.

Challenge
Based on feedback from employee surveys, Georgia-Pacific decided to address managers' communication skills, particularly face to face communication skills.

Approach
Develop tools to help managers address and improve their face to face communication skills.

Outcome
  • Developed a 360 evaluation tool for corporate managers, through which managers could have their communication skills rated by a group of their choice (peers, subordinates, supervisors, etc.); providing managers with real data regarding perception and effectiveness.
  • This tool also includes valuable information such as best practices for improving communication skills across eight areas, from giving direction to listening.
  • Developed communications improvement plans for mill managers.
  • Developed online communication toolkits to provide managers the tools to support various company initiatives such as Diversity programs, benefits, etc.
